Tonight we saw Civil Service take on Glenburn at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Civil Service (1) and Glenburn (9). The format for the match was a 4 Vs 3 player format.
Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Glenburn young guns James and Matthew were joined by team captain Steve for what was the tough match expected despite the final score. Up first James and Matthew got Glenburn off to the ideal start. Next was Steve who defied his not so young years to turn on the style and send Glenburn 3-0 ahead. Matthew then continued his good form with an entertaining win over Kieran. Steve then had a very tight match against Adrian which could have gone either way but it was to be Adrian’s night as he won the 2nd set 14-12 and closed out victory in the 4th set 12-10 to record a point for Civil Service. Next up was James who went 2-0 up, but the experience of Maurice saw him claw back to 2-2, before James turned up the power to win the 5th. James and Steve were up again to try and get Glenburn over the winning line. Losing the 1st set, James knew he had to work hard and ground out a 3-1 victory over Brian. Match of the evening was on the other table where Kieran was very strong taking a 2 sets to Nil lead over Steve and going 3-0 up in the 3rd. From somewhere Steve then managed to summon up some (defensive) superpower and drag himself back to 2-2. The 5th set have everyone watching enthralled as it went to 10-10, before Steve putting on a captain’s performance closed the set out 13-11. Matthew won the last singles match which left the usual entertaining doubles, the highlight of which was a rally where all the players looked as if they were playing ’round the world’ tables tennis before Adrain produced a classic round the net finish. Despite Adrian and Brain’s best efforts James and Matthew won the match 3-1 for a final scoreline of 9-1. A great match played in a great friendly atmosphere.”
