Glenburn B 10 – 0 Bangor

Belfast and District Table Tennis Division 2 – Glenburn B (10) – Bangor (0).

Tonight we saw Glenburn B take on Bangor at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Glenburn B (10) and Bangor (0). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 3 player format. Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Glenburn knew going into the match that they needed to win at least 8-2 to secure the league. Stepping up to this challenge were James and Rebecca (neither yet requiring self-isolation as Queens students!), together with Erin. Captain Steve, having won the consolation event at the Vets tournament the previous night decided to watch the young guns from the sidelines. Although the final score was 10-0, the Bangor players proved their usual competitive selves with quite a few sets going to deuce. After a slow start against Mark, James (winning the first set 11-9) found his range and produced a defensive masterclass to win his three matches 3-0 conceding only 35 further points. Erin fought hard against John and Mark to win both in 4 sets which saw some hard hitting putting the ball in danger! After seeing off David, Rebecca had to concentrate hard to win 3 very close sets against John. At this stage Glenburn were 7-0 up with Rebecca playing Mark, and Erin playing David, knowing one win would suffice. After winning the first set 11-9, Rebecca started to move through the gears to win 3-0 against Mark and had the privilege of getting Glenburn across the line. Shortly after, Erin signed off a successful season with yet another hard fought win against David. Steve then drew straws (or actually table tennis balls) to see who would play the doubles, with Rebecca and Erin selected. He might have questioned his strategy when they lost the first set 10-12 to Mark and David, however they came back strongly to see the match out in 4 sets. Many thanks to Bangor for the friendly and competitive match. While tonight it was James, Rebecca and Erin who took the honours with the win, with James and Rebecca maintaining their 100% record in the singles matches they played in the league, it was a real team effort with important wins by all players throughout the year, including Andy before heading to America at Christmas, with other highlights being Erin securing a draw against Queens in the first half with a win against Khoa, Lucy Craig with critical wins in the return match against Queens as part of a very consistent high performance season, Lucy Johnston coming to the fore in the second half of the season with great wins against Ormeau A and helping secure the draw against CS B with both a singles win and doubles victory partnering Captain Steve enabling Glenburn to come back from 3-5 down. As well as playing consistently well throughout the season, Captain Steve must be commended on getting the best out of the young players with his support and encouragement throughout the season. From my viewpoint, it has been a privilege to help coach the team and see the development of the players as the year went on. We would like to record our thanks again to all those involved in the organisation of the B&D league in what is often a thankless task.”.

Glenburn B 9 – 1 Civil Service 2A

Belfast and District Table Tennis Division 2 – Glenburn B (9) – Civil Service 2A (1).

Tonight we saw Glenburn B take on Civil Service 2A at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Glenburn B (9) and Civil Service 2A (1). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 3 player format. Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “While the score was 9-1 overall, there were a few matches which went to 5 sets which could have gone either way. Even the ones which didn’t had a number of deuce sets as Civil Service put up a great fight. The match really broke down to the attacking play of Rebecca and Erin getting through their six matches in about the same time as the defensive James played thee matches. The night started with Rebecca and Erin managing straight set victories against Ben and Mervyn, however these included deuce sets as Civil Service fought hard. On the other table James and Maurice were displaying a defensive masterclass – the match saw some extra long rallies and swung back and forwards until James managed to win the fifth. Rebecca then had to fight very hard for a straight sets victory over Maurice while James continued his marathon night in his next match against Mervyn with a 16-14 first set win, before winning the next couple of sets a bit easier. Erin meanwhile was made to work hard for a four set victory over the ever improving and dangerous Ben. After their marathons against James, Mervyn and Maurice then found the change of pace against the exceptional attacking skills of Rebecca and Erin harder to handle succumbing to straight set defeats. Again on the other table, James was giving value for money with another 5 set match while leaving the Glenburn coaches puzzled as initially he became ultra attacking. Ben produced excellent table tennis to edge the first set 12-10 before running away with the second set leading 10-1 before taking it 11-5. This was when James was reminded by Coach Steve that he was a defender, and there was a dramatic turnaround as James won the next two sets to 3 before closing out the fifth. This left Glenburn 9-0 up going into the doubles. As usual the doubles was the highlight of the night with some scintillating rallies and unbelievable returns from all players. After Glenburn edged the first set and ran away with the second set, it looked as if the match would be over quickly. However Ben and Maurice had other ideas and, in another dramatic turnaround, produced some of their best table tennis of the evening which Rebecca and Erin ultimately had no answer to, to win the next three sets and record victory for Civil Service. It was a great night’s entertainment played in the usual friendly spirit.”.

St Annes B 3 – 7 Glemburn B

Belfast and District Table Tennis Division 2 – St Annes B (3) – Glemburn B (7).

Tonight we saw St Annes B take on Glemburn B at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of St Annes B (3) and Glemburn B (7). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 3 player format. Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Glenburn once again rotated their squad (or otherwise known as who can play this week?) with Erin making a welcome reappearance, and James and Lucy J giving way after their flawless performance the previous week, due to unavailability and the decision to only take 3 players on the trek to Dungannon on a school night. St. Annes came out of the blocks much quicker than Glenburn with Daniel recording a 3-0 victory over Erin and Mark edging out (literally) Steve 11-9 in the 5th in a match which could have seen the expedite rule engaged, but which also had some fierce hitting with Mark winning a very memorable rally with a cross court backhand. Next up was Lucy against Tom and Erin against Mark, with Glenburn again getting off to the worst start losing the first sets in each match easily. It was time for the girls to dig in, and with Erin now eventually warmed up she took the next 3 sets to record Glenburn’s first victory of the night. On the other table, Lucy was engaged in a see saw battle with Tom going 2-1 up before Tom played some excellent shots to get himself back on level terms. Lucy then used all her experience to grind out the 5th to level the match at 2-2. The next set of matches saw Lucy pit her skills against Daniel, and after two relatively straightfoward sets suddenly found herself in a great battle with Daniel with set points for and against in a set which could have gone either way until she eventually got over the line 17-15 in the 3rd. Meanwhile the vastly experienced Steve had too much in his bag of tricks for Tom, and he then repeated the feat against Daniel to record straight set victories. In a repeat of the reverse fixture at Glenburn, Lucy was straight back on the table again taking on Mark with a feeling of deja vu as she quickly went 0-1 down before fighting hard to win the next two sets 11-9, 12-10. Mark was not finished and came back to level the match. Into the decider and Lucy started well only for Mark to establish a lead going into the closing stages. Lucy then summoned her last strength to fight back and take the 5th 11-8 to leave Glenburn 6-2 up. This left Erin playing Tom in the final singles, and at this stage she was fully awake and won in 3 sets, hitting some great shots, although Tom gave as good as he got especially in the 2nd set which Erin edged 12-10. On to the doubles which saw Mark and Daniel line up against Erin and Lucy. Some who saw (or even played in it) may have described it as an exhibition match (others maybe not!), however there was some great tt by all four players, and suddenly everything Daniel hit were winning shots with Mark backing him up with some lovely shots. It was all too much for the Glenburn girls and, even with Mark’s generous (declined!) offer to let Steve use St. Annes ‘time out’ as well as their own, Daniel and Mark came out worthy winners 3-0. A very competitive match played in a great spirit. Many thanks to St. Annes for their hospitality and sportsmanship, and all the best for the remainder of the season.”.

Steve Hughes reporting on the match said “1st match up James vs Alex. Despite missing the first half of the season James got Glenburn off to a great start with a hard earned victory. Next was the first battle of the Lucys with Lucy C vs Lucy McI. Lucy McI started well, going one set up, before Lucy C settled down with a mix of attacking play and brilliant defence to win the next three sets. Steve then played Anna who was outstanding in the first two sets, her service creating many difficulties for the veteran. However, as with last week, despite being 0-2 down, Steve managed to win the next three sets to put Glenburn 3-0 up. The second of the battle of the Lucys saw Lucy J play Lucy McI. Although Lucy J won tight sets 3-0, credit to both players for some breathtaking rallies. Next up James proved too strong for Anna, and at this stage Glenburn were guaranteed at least a draw. Lucy C then played the uber attacking Alex. Although Lucy went 2-1 up, Alex went up another level to take the next two with a barrage of attacking strokes. Lucy J then went all the way against Anna winning well in the 5th to continue her recent run of good form before Alex blew Steve away. Lucy McI played very well in the last singles but James’s stubborn defence proved too much for the talented youngster. The highlight of the evening was a superb doubles match, James and Lucy C vs Alex and Anna. This was won by the Glenburn pairing however the standard of play by all four players was exceptional. It was a classic match between two top defenders and two very good attackers. Great to see Jeff supporting and encouraging his team all the way. Our thanks to Ormeau for agreeing to play the match tonight.”

Glenburn B 5 – 5 Civil Service 2B

Tonight we saw Glenburn B take on Civil Service 2B at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Glenburn B (5) and Civil Service 2B (5). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 4 player format.

Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Glenburn came up against an inspired Civil Service team who significantly raised the level of their game to ensure there was no repeat of the 9-1 scoreline from the first half of the season. The first six matches were split 3-3 with a Captain’s performance from Steve winning his two matches, while Lucy J played great table tennis to win her match against Gus and, despite putting in a fighting performance, lost to the guile of Martin in her other match. Lucy C started superbly in each of her matches however Gus and Brian were inspired on the night and clawed their way back with both winning the 4th set 14-12 which was enough for Gus to win 3-1 and Brian was able to close out the 5th for a 3-2 victory. This left the match nicely poised going into the last 3 singles. In a battle of the defenders, the (vast) experience of Martin overcame the youth of Lucy C in 5 sets. On the other table Lucy J was also having a 5 set ding dong match against Joe, coming from 2 sets down to level it at 2-2. The 5th set proved to be a great battle with Joe edging (sometimes literally!) across the line 13-11. This left Glenburn needing to win the last singles and doubles to salvage a draw. Up stepped Captain courageous Steve to once again lead from the front with an impressive 3 set victory. On to the doubles and, after a short team discussion, Glenburn decided to field a new pairing of Steve and Lucy J to take on Gus and Martin. This proved to be an inspired decision with Glenburn winning in 3 sets to grab a draw overall from the jaws of defeat. Player of the night was undoubtedly Glenburn’s Captain Steve with 3 singles wins and the doubles, however Lucy J also stepped up a level to claim a singles and doubles victory, with Lucy C, who has been in great form all season, unfortunate to come out on the wrong end of a couple of 5 set matches. For Civil Service, Martin was undefeated in the singles and each of the other players grabbed a victory. A great night’s entertainment played in a great spirit by both teams.”

Queens A 5 – 5 Glenburn B

Tonight we saw Queens A take on Glenburn B at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Queens A (5) and Glenburn B (5). The format for the match was a 4 Vs 4 player format.

Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Tonight saw the battle of the two unbeaten teams in Division 2 and the match lived up to expectations with terrific thrilling top table tennis played all round. With a 4 vs 4 format Steve and Lucy J each played Khoi and Zhenyu and there were two 5 set thrillers in this pairing. Lucy J started exceptionally well playing outstanding table tennis against Khoi, and held a 2-1 lead after 3 sets which went all the way before Khoi managed to close out the 4th & 5th sets. Steve clawed his way back from 0-2 sets down against Zhenyu to win the 3rd set 15-13. This proved the turning point as Steve went on to win the next two sets. Lucy J had another close match against Zhenyu losing in 4 sets while Khoi had just to much guile (and a few nets and edges!) against Steve. This set of matches therefore went 3-1 to Queens so the pressure was on in the other squash court for James and Lucy C to perform against Chris and Zoe. The Glenburn dynamic defensive duo had to play very well against the very stubborn Queens players who just kept coming back with Zoe overturning a 9-3 deficit to win the 3rd set against James. However the consistency of James and Lucy C, combined with some very powerful hitting meant they won this set of matches 4-0, thus continuing Lucy C’s superb run of league form, as well as James upping his level, overcoming any rustiness in playing only his second match of the season. Thus Glenburn going into the doubles with a 5-3 lead. Zoe and Zhenyu proved they had a great understanding and partnership and, although the highlight of the first set was a stunning backhand by Lucy J, the Lucys couldn’t maintain the high level required with Zoe and Zhenyu deservedly winning 3-0. This left the doubles between Steve/James and Khoi/Chris which turned into another 5 set thriller. The match see-sawed with Steve/James taking a the 1st set 11-9 to lead 1-0 only for Khoi/Chris to raise their game and take the next two sets to 5 and 9 again to lead 2-1. This spurred another recovery from Steve/James taking the 4th to 8. Khoi/Chris then rushed into a 5-2 lead at the turn in the 5th only to be pegged back to 8-8, before closing out the set to 9. The match was played in great sporting spirit by both teams with a draw being a fair result..”

Glenburn B 10 – 0 Ormeau 2B

Tonight we saw Glenburn B take on Ormeau 2B at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Glenburn B (10) and Ormeau 2B (0). The format for the match was a 4 Vs 4 player format.

Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “With the two Lucys not available, and Andy having left to live in America, Glenburn had to thank Rebecca for putting table tennis before studies, and James for putting in a guest appearance having not played since last season. Andrew and Matthew McCann started off very well for Ormeau B going 2-1 and 1-0 up against Rebecca and Erin who started slowly – maybe still had to work off some Christmas turkey! However, Rebecca and Erin moved up the gears to record wins in the opening matches. James, who has probably played more matches with a frying pan (in winning the Glenburn annual Christmas frying pan competition) than with a table tennis bat in the last six months, and Steve then each produced a mix of defensive and attacking play to overcome Richard and Hamish respectively. Andrew then produced another strong performance and had yet another close match losing 1-3 in very tight sets against Erin, while Rebecca found some outstanding form to overpower Matthew 3-0. James and Steve again played well to win the reverse singles against Hamish and Richard. This then led to the entertaining doubles matches where Glenburn again came out on the right side of close sets to win each 3-1. The 10-0 win by Glenburn was only achieved after some very hard fought matches and did not reflect the work put in by Ormeau B team. The match was once again played in a great friendly spirit and we wish Ormeau B the best for the rest of the season.”

Bangor 3 – 7 Glenburn B

Belfast and District Table Tennis Division 2 – Bangor (3) – Glenburn B (7).

Tonight we saw Bangor take on Glenburn B at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Bangor (3) and Glenburn B (7). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 3 player format. Steve Hughes reporting on the match said “Andy managed to get Glenburn off to a good start with a 3-0 win over Mark. For the home team David, one of three left-handers, met the inform Erin and came through in 4 sets. Steve then put the away team 2-1 up with a good win over John. Next was Erin against Mark, and she played really well to overcome him in 3 sets. David then won his next match against Steve again in 4 sets before John took Andy all the way but lost 7-11 in the final set. Steve and Mark had their usual battle with Steve getting a rare win. Glenburn were 5-2 up at this stage but David was in great form to beat Andy in 4 sets and give him a well earned maximum of 3/3 in the singles. He admitted afterwards this was his first win against Andy for about 10 years! Erin produced some brilliant attacking play to win against John. In the doubles Mark and David took on Andy and Erin who managed to keep their 100% record as a partnership to beat Bangor in 4 sets and a hard earned 7-3 victory for the visitors.

The match was almost certainly Andy’s last match as he hopes to leave in December to join his wife in Florida. On a personal note I have played with him if memory serves me for 13/14 years. During that time I have never once seen him lose his temper. He has always played the game with respect for his opponents and a smile on his face. I am really going to miss him and wish him well in his new life. Anyone who knows Andy might wish to pass on their best wishes using this forum.”.

Civil Service A 3 – 7 Glenburn

Tonight we saw Civil Service A take on Glenburn at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Civil Service A (3) and Glenburn (7). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 4 player format.

Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Both Glenburn and Civil Service teams were a blend of experience and youth. Young Ben started off very fast against Andy (the old guy for Glenburn!) to take the first set, however Andy’s experience told in the end especially when winning a very tight 3rd set 16-14. On the other table the very experienced Maurice took a 2-1 lead against the youthful but experienced Erin, only for Erin to claw her way back to win the last 2 sets to give Glenburn the perfect start. Next up for Glenburn were the two young and mighty Lucys. Billy used all his guile to overcome Lucy J, while Maurice had another 5 setter only to lose to the ever improving Lucy C. Ben then started well again against Erin but once again, despite a valiant effort, he succumbed to the more experienced Erin who had to raise her game to a high level to record victory in 4 sets. On the other table Andy was having a very tight battle with Billy who just kept coming back only to lose -9, -9 and -11. This gave Glenburn a 5-1 lead with the two Lucys back on the table against Ben and Billy. This time Ben was able to hold his nerve and convert his start into a victory against Lucy J who put up a terrific fight coming back from 2-8 only to lose the first set 14-12 and again in the 3rd set losing 11-9. Lucy C’s defensive and attacking qualities were once more in evidence to record a very impressive 3-0 victory over Billy and maintain her great start to the season, and get Glenburn across the winning line. Andy then proved too powerful against Maurice before the two Lucys got some doubles practice ahead of the Ulster Open against Ben and Maurice. Despite some incredible rallys and superb shots especially from Lucy J, Ben and Maurice proved just too good to win 3-1 leaving the final match score 7-3 to Glenburn. While Captain Steve again dropped himself in favour of the slightly younger players Glenburn were able to field, he was his usual effective self in coaching and cajoling the team to victory.”

Tonight we saw Glenburn B take on St. Annes B at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Glenburn B (6) and St. Annes B (4). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 3 player format. Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Glenburn edged an epic match 6-4 against St. Annes with 7 of the matches going to 5 sets, and the win only determined by winning deuce in the 5th in the doubles. Andy started very fast and proved too strong for Daniel while on the other table Erin came from 0-2 down to level against Mark only to lose in the 5th. Lucy then had to use all of her defensive cunning and attacking strength, coming from 1-2 down, to see off St. Annes’ player of the night, Tom, in the 5th. At the same time another 5 setter saw Andy do the same against Mark to give Glenburn a 3-1 lead. However St. Annes were determined and continually clawed back matches and, after 8 matches, the scores were level at 4-4. The match of the night saw Tom (literally) edge out Andy on the final point to win 19-17 in the 5th, having previously held his nerve to beat Erin 11-9 in the 5th as well. Lucy continued to play at a high level to overcome Daniel, but an immediate turnaround to play Mark proved a step too far as Mark edged her out in the 5th. This left Erin to pull out the stops and win the crucial 9th match against Daniel to give Glenburn a 5-4 lead going into the doubles. The crowd got their money’s worth as Tom and Daniel expertly clawed their way back from 0-2 down to 2-2 and force a decider. Erin revelled in the doubles challenge producing some great winners ably assisted by Andy who managed to serve out for the 11-9 win to the relief of the Glenburn team and supporters. Thanks to St. Annes for a competitive match and travelling up through some bad road conditions.”.

Ormeau 2B 3 – 7 Glenburn B

Tonight we saw Ormeau 2B take on Glenburn B at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Ormeau 2B (3) and Glenburn B (7). The format for the match was a 4 Vs 4 player format.

Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Very hard fought match played in a great spirit where, as usual, the final score does not tell the story of the night where matches could have gone either way and the result was again in doubt until the two doubles matches. Andy came out of the blocks slowly against Andreas and, despite winning the 2nd set, could not complete a comeback with Andreas overpowering him 3-1. On the other table there was an intriguing match between Captain Consistency (and very experienced) Steve for Glenburn and the youthful Lucy McIvor. Lucy gave Steve a great workout but in the end Steve’s experience proved just too much as he ran out a 3-1 winner. On to the 2nd set of matches and Lucy C showed how much she has improved in an impressive win against Anna. On the other table Lucy J started well against Emma, however Emma came back strongly to win 3-1 to leave the overall score at 2-2. Andy then moved up the gears and proved too powerful and experienced to beat Lucy McIvor, while Steve used all his defensive skills to take an inspired 3-0 win over Andreas. Lucy J had a titanic match with Anna coming back from 0-2 to level at 2-2 but Anna managed to re-group and take the 5th. Lucy C once again impressed in taking a crucial win against Emma after losing the first set to leave the overall score 3-5 going into the doubles. The doubles partnership of Lucy J and Lucy C is beginning to blossom and proved too strong for Emma and Anna to get Glenburn over the winning line. However, the match of the night was happening on the other table with Andy/Steve saving match points in the 5th set against a very strong combination of Andreas/Lucy McIvor to finally take the win 14-12 to give a final scoreline of 7-3 to Glenburn. The format for the match was a 3 Vs 3 player format. Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “The final score of 9-1 was a bit harsh on Civil Service with Gus, Brian and Joe battling hard throughout the evening to ensure there were no easy wins for Glenburn. Many sets went to deuce and there were a number of comebacks by Glenburn in both sets and matches, including Rebecca coming from 5-10 down in the 2nd set against Brian to eventually win the set 18-16, and a great final singles match where Rebecca again gave the crowd value for money coming back from 0-2 to win 3-2 against Joe to maintain her unbeaten record. ‘Captain Consistency’ Steve lived up to his title dropping only one set on the evening, while Andy had great tussles in all his matches, eventually losing deuce in the 4th against Brian who recorded the win for Civil Service. Andy and Rebecca closed out the doubles to leave the final score 9-1. Great night’s entertainment played in great spirit.”.

Glenburn B 5 – 5 Queens A

Tonight we saw Glenburn B take on Queens A at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Glenburn B (5) and Queens A (5). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 4 player format.

Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Tonight saw a classic encounter where the score of the match was always in doubt until the doubles. An experienced Glenburn team came up against Queens who have significantly strengthened their team with some new top talent. Queens got off to the perfect start winning both the opening matches with former Glenburn Div 1 player, Khoa, getting the better of Andy, and Erin losing out to a very hard hitting Zhenyu. Captain Steve then used all his experience to get Glenburn on the scoreboard with a good win over Julian. Then in the battle of the women, Erin came from 2-1 down to secure a great victory over the lightening quick Zoe leaving the score at 2-2. The next set of matches was shared with Andy claiming a win, and Khoa again proving what a top player he is in the win over Steve (although he did have more edges than Lucy J normally gets!). At 3-3 it was anybody’s match, and Andy showed true grit to come from 2-1 down to earn a hard fought 5 set victory over Julian, while Zoe proved too quick for Steve. This set up the match of the night between Erin and Khoa. Erin dug deep and fought hard for every point and, in a thrilling 4 set match which went to deuce every set, recorded a famous victory to take Glenburn into a 5-4 lead going into the doubles. Despite their best efforts Andy/Erin could not quite hit the heights and Khoa/Zhenyu took a deserved win to end the match with a fair 5-5 result. Thanks to Chris and the Queens team for playing their part in a great night’s entertainment.”

Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “The first match of the season saw Ormeau 2B take on Glenburn B giving both teams the opportunity to get rid of any rustiness from the summer break. The start saw the match swing back and forth with Erin, making a welcome return to Glenburn colours after finishing Uni, edging a very close first match against Matt after 5 tight sets. On the other table, Andy L (Glenburn) lost to Andy (Ormeau) in 4 very tight sets. Next up for Glenburn were the two Lucys, with Lucy C continuing her fine form from last season with a 3-0 win, however Lucy J lost yet another 5 set match with Andy performing miracles in the 5th set to grab a win from the jaws of defeat leaving the overall match at 2-2. From here on however Glenburn took control with Andy L winning another 5 set thriller and Erin and Lucy C clicking through the gears to take 3-0 wins. Lucy J then showed great maturity, putting the disappointment of her 5 set loss behind her, to win 3-1 in very impressive style. Erin closed out the singles with a tight 3-1 win over Andy to maintain her unbeaten singles record. Erin and Andy were very fast out of the traps in the doubles against Matt and Andy only dropping a single point in the first two sets before edging the 3rd 12-10 to take the overall score to 8-2 to Glenburn. The match was played in a very friendly atmosphere and great spirit. Bangor 3 – 7 Glenburn

Belfast and District Table Tennis Division 2 – Bangor (3) – Glenburn (7).

Tonight we saw Bangor take on Glenburn at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Bangor (3) and Glenburn (7). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 3 player format. Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Glenburn entered the last match of the season with the added pressure of knowing that they needed at least a draw to land the Division 2 league title however, despite having two defenders on the team, there was never any chance of playing for a draw! Squad rotation saw the Div 2 singles champion from the previous evening, Matthew Cherry, replaced for this match by James Magrath who had finished 3rd losing to teammate Andy Loane who was runner-up. However it was Lucy Craig, who has had a great season this year, who led out the team against Mark Willis in the first match, and what a match it was to start the evening. Going 2-0 down, Lucy then found her form and won the next two sets, but was unfortunate to lose out in a very close 5th set after a marathon match, with some extra long rallies and great defensive technique on show, lasting over 30 minutes. Andy then was fast out of the blocks to get Glenburn on the board, followed up by James for Glenburn to lead 2-1. Andy and James then won a couple of tight singles matches to put Glenburn 4-1 up. Next up was Lucy and she did not disappoint with some very strong defensive play mixed in with some big hits to win her match 3-0 and give Glenburn a 5-1 lead and the Division 2 Championship. While happy with the achievement, Glenburn were in no mood to relax with James finishing off his singles with a hard fought win over Mark Willis 11-9 in the 5th, to maintain his unbeaten record since losing in the first match of the season and ensure Glenburn finished the season with a win. Lucy then came up against a very determined David Coates who displayed some extremely hard hitting attacking play and got the 2nd point on the board for Bangor. Andy Loane then finished off the singles matches with a win over the unfortunate John Coates who suffered a net and an edge in the last two points of what was an entertaining match. On to the doubles where Lucy and James continued their defensive partnership, only this time they seemed to want to see what it would be like to attack more…it was not to be as Mark and David won three close sets to see the final score as 3-7 in favour of Glenburn. The win finished off the season in style for Glenburn to ensure the Championship victory was grabbed from the jaws of defeat at the half way stage of the season. While it was Lucy, Andy and James who did the business tonight, credit must go to all the Glenburn players who played throughout the season and contributed to the end result along with the hard work put in by various coaches both at the club training sessions and during matches – it really was a team performance led by team captain and chief coach Steve. Glenburn would like to place on record thanks to Bangor for the good spirit shown this evening, and to all other teams in the league who were a credit to the sport and played their part in an enjoyable season. Thanks also to the various organisers of B&DTT for the work they have put in during the year including this website.”.

Tonight we saw Killyleagh take on Glenburn at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Killyleagh (0) and Glenburn (10). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 3 player format. Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “With this being the second match in 4 days for Glenburn, there was a bit of squad rotation with a straight swap of one young Grosvenor defender (James) for an even younger one (Lucy C). The other swap saw another drop in age and style as the attacking Andy came in for defensive captain Steve who was celebrating his 30+++ birthday. Matthew continued his fine form in winning his matches, and Andy and Lucy didn’t disappoint either as they performed superbly to make a clean sweep of the singles, although as usual there was strong resistance from the experienced Killyleagh trio. On to the doubles and Matthew and Andy produced a fine attacking display to close out the match 10-0 although this scoreline does not reflect the tightness of the matches all night, with lots of edges and nets for both sides. Credit again to coach Willie on his work with all players. Overall it was a very friendly match which was enjoyed by all.”.

The format for the match was a 3 Vs 3 player format. Andrew Gibson reporting on the match said “Very entertaining match at Queens last night with 7-3 flattering a Killyleagh team who were pushed all the way by Julian, Chris and Hailey. 6 of the matches went to 4 or 5 sets and 2 of those could easily have gone to Queens. Hailey can feel a trifle unfortunate, losing 11-9 in the 5th to Jay who managed a couple of well-timed edges/nets in both of the last 2 sets. The doubles was the highlight of the night with Jay and Andrew somehow scraping a win after being heavily behind in all of the last 3 sets. Civil Service 1 – 9 Glenburn

Tonight we saw Civil Service take on Glenburn at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Civil Service (1) and Glenburn (9). The format for the match was a 4 Vs 3 player format.

Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Glenburn young guns James and Matthew were joined by team captain Steve for what was the tough match expected despite the final score. Up first James and Matthew got Glenburn off to the ideal start. Next was Steve who defied his not so young years to turn on the style and send Glenburn 3-0 ahead. Matthew then continued his good form with an entertaining win over Kieran. Steve then had a very tight match against Adrian which could have gone either way but it was to be Adrian’s night as he won the 2nd set 14-12 and closed out victory in the 4th set 12-10 to record a point for Civil Service. Next up was James who went 2-0 up, but the experience of Maurice saw him claw back to 2-2, before James turned up the power to win the 5th. James and Steve were up again to try and get Glenburn over the winning line. Losing the 1st set, James knew he had to work hard and ground out a 3-1 victory over Brian. Match of the evening was on the other table where Kieran was very strong taking a 2 sets to Nil lead over Steve and going 3-0 up in the 3rd. From somewhere Steve then managed to summon up some (defensive) superpower and drag himself back to 2-2. The 5th set have everyone watching enthralled as it went to 10-10, before Steve putting on a captain’s performance closed the set out 13-11. Matthew won the last singles match which left the usual entertaining doubles, the highlight of which was a rally where all the players looked as if they were playing ’round the world’ tables tennis before Adrain produced a classic round the net finish. Despite Adrian and Brain’s best efforts James and Matthew won the match 3-1 for a final scoreline of 9-1. A great match played in a great friendly atmosphere.”

Glenburn 10 – 0 Knockagh

Belfast and District Table Tennis Division 2 – Glenburn (10) – Knockagh (0).

Tonight we saw Glenburn take on Knockagh at home in Division 2 of the Belfast and District Table Tennis League. The match ended with a score line of Glenburn (10) and Knockagh (0). The format for the match was a 3 Vs 3 player format. Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “Tonight saw the top of the table clash between Glenburn and Knockagh. Glenburn young guns were looking to reverse the defeat inflicted by the experienced Knockagh team in the first half of the season. Matthew, Rebecca and James certainly started at a fast pace winning their opening matches 3-0, before Peter managed to get a set on the board for Knockagh. This was as good as it got for Knockagh in the second set of matches as Matthew closed out the win 3-1 and Rebecca won a very tight match against Gary 3-0, and then James saw Glenburn across the victory line for a 6-0 score with another 3-0 victory. This also saw Knockagh’s impressive unbeaten run in the league come to an end. This seemed to spur Knockagh on in the last set of singles matches with some very tight matches, the highlight of which was a seesaw encounter between Rebecca and David, with Rebecca edging the match 11-9 in the 5th, with a crucial time out called by Willie with Rebecca 5-8 down. On to the doubles with Knockagh determined to try and get a point on the board. Things looked good for them as David and Peter took a 2-0 lead in a match which produced some unbelievable rallies. Matthew and James then dug in deep to pull the match back to 2-2. The 5th set looked to be going the way of the experienced Knockagh team, but the youngsters fought back again and Matthew and James eventually took the 5th set 12-10 to ensure a 10-0 victory was secured. While some of the rallies will live long in the memory, the ten matches played will undoubtedly be remembered for what must have been a record number of edges and nets!”.

After this Glenburn really turned up the power with Lucy and Andy winning both their singles matches, though not without a fight especially against Joel, and Matthew and James winning the reverse singles with Connor again putting in a good performance. The doubles matches were as usual very entertaining with great rallies with Andy and Matthew just getting the better of Connor and Tim, and Lucy and James again combining to close out the match with a win to record an overall 9-1 victory. Neil Magrath reporting on the match said “This was a great match where the youth of Glenburn were pitched against the experience of Civil Service, with youth edging the match 6-4 after another see-saw performance. Glenburn came out of the blocks very fast with Matthew and James winning to gain a 2-0 lead, only to be pegged back when both Lucys lost tight matches to Brian and Maurice, with LJ again just unable to close out sets losing one 15-17. Matthew and James restored a 2 point lead with convincing victories, only for Adrian and Brian to pull the match level with LJ losing another set 12-14 and LC almost turning her match around recovering from 8-2 down to level at 8-8 but it was not to be this time. Matthew and Maurice then played a crucial match going to the 5th, with Matthew continuing his fine form to give Glenburn a 5-4 lead. The match of the night however was the doubles with James and Lucy C, combining again after their victory last week, where once again youth overcame the experienced pairing of Adrian and Maurice recovering from losing the first set to win in the 4th set of a very entertaining and high quality match with great rallies.”
